What Is a JEF Embroidery File?
JEF is the stitch file format used by Janome embroidery machines, and Elna machines read it too. The file tells your machine where every stitch goes, in what order, and when to change thread color.
You may also see JEF+. It is an extended version created by Janome’s own software and some newer machines. Our files are standard JEF, which is the most compatible option across Janome models, old and new.
You don’t need any special software to use our JEF designs: download, unzip, copy to USB and select the design on your machine.
How to Transfer JEF Files to Your Janome
The same simple process works on most Janome embroidery machines with a USB port.
Download the ZIP
After checkout, download your design from your account or the email link.
Unzip on your computer
Extract the ZIP file. Your machine can’t read files that are still zipped.
Copy the .jef file to USB
Copy the .jef file in the size you want to a USB stick. Keep file names short and simple.
Select it on the machine
Insert the USB, open embroidery mode, choose the USB source and select your design and hoop.
Can’t see the design on your machine? Some Janome models only read files from a specific folder on the USB stick. Check your machine’s manual for the folder name.
Choose the Right Janome Hoop
Our designs come in several sizes. Check the stitch area of your hoop and pick the design size that fits inside it.
| Janome hoop | Stitch area | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| RE10b | 1.5″ × 5.5″ | Names, borders, sleeves |
| SQ14b | 5.5″ × 5.5″ | Small motifs, baby items, bibs |
| RE20b | 5.5″ × 7.9″ | Shirts, towels, tote bags |
| SQ20b | 7.9″ × 7.9″ | Pillows, quilt blocks |
| RE28b | 7.9″ × 11″ | Large designs, sweatshirt backs |
Hoop sizes based on the Janome Memory Craft 500E. Available hoops vary by model, so check which ones your machine supports.
Tips for Stitching JEF Designs
Use the included size
Pick the size made for your hoop instead of resizing on the machine. Big changes in size can make stitches too loose or too dense.
Match the stabilizer
Use cut-away stabilizer for stretchy fabrics like t-shirts, and tear-away for towels and stable cotton.
Test stitch first
Try new designs on a scrap of similar fabric to check colors, density and tension before your final project.

Quick answers about JEF files and Janome compatibility.
Do all your designs include the JEF format?
Yes. Every design includes JEF, along with PES, DST, EXP, HUS, VP3, SEW and XXX, all in one ZIP file.
Which machines can use JEF files?
JEF is the native format of Janome embroidery machines, and Elna machines read it as well. If your machine has a USB port and reads JEF, you can use our designs.
What is the difference between JEF and JEF+?
JEF+ is an extended version created by Janome software and supported by some newer machines. Standard JEF works on the widest range of Janome models, which is why we use it.
Do I need software to use JEF designs?
No. Unzip the download on your computer, copy the .jef file to a USB stick and select it on your machine.
Can I resize a JEF design on my machine?
Small adjustments are usually fine, but large changes can affect stitch quality. Each design comes in several sizes, so choose the one that fits your hoop.
Are there free JEF embroidery designs?
Yes. Our free designs also include the JEF format. Browse them in the free designs collection.
